Maries is a village at Thassos, not as well-known as some others. It is located high on the slope of the cliff, inside the island.
The name of the village of Maries can be explained in different ways: some historians rely on the legend, which states that the fault is two Maria who survived in this place after the attack of pirates. Another option involves the appearance of the name of this village from a multitude of mulberry trees here (murias, in Greek). Previously, the village maintained a close relationship with St. Athos, and also had representations of three monasteries from Athos.
About ten kilometers from the village there is the Rock of Marion, more famous among tourists than the village itself. Beach Scala Marion is divided among themselves into two lagoons. Taverns on the waterfront provide a pleasant stay for a refreshing drink or a Greek dish.
The cliff Marion and the village of Maries are located near Limenaria, a lively town on the southern coast of Thassos.
