The village of Castro

Castro is a village in the depths of the island, located 200 m above sea level, in the mountains.

Castro is one of the most ancient settlements on Thassos, which have preserved the traditional way and the appearance of old times.

Castro is translated as a "fortress", a settlement was founded in 1403. There used to be a fortress, which, after the destruction, became an integral part of many houses, as local residents used the stones in their household and in the construction of houses. The village is located in the mountains, far from the coast so as not to become an easy prey for the pirates who were hunted at that time, that also invaders.

Currently, Castro does not even have electricity. The houses are really ascetic and are not very cozy. You should come here if you want to feel the spirit of non-tourist Greece. In winter, Castro is empty, and Europeans come here on summer days, who are ready to give up some modern amenities. However, most often in Castro tourists come on the way to Ipsario.

If you visited Castro, you will appreciate Theologos - another mountain village of Thassos.
